Lonely Planet was started by a couple of people with only a few dollars in their pockets but imbued with a huge sense of adventure. They married shortly after meeting on a bench in Regent’s Park. They wanted to go to Australia and managed to get to it by land and by crossing through Europe and Asia. It took months and every bit of money they had. They ended up being extremely happy.
Anxious to spread the word about this kind of travel, they wrote their first travel guide called Across Asia on the Cheap. Lonely Planet Shop sold over 1,500 copies in a week and this is how the company came into being. Their second book was called Southeast Asia on a Shoestring. In the following 30 years, Lonely Planet became a brand loved across the world. Tony and Maureen had received quite a few offers for the company. In 2007 they found a partner who they trusted to remain true to the company’s goals and principles. BBC Worldwide bought a 75% share in Lonely Planet and pledge to uphold the company credo of commitment to independent travel.
BBC Worldwide is wholly owned by the BBC. Lonely planet now has offices in London, Oakland, and Melbourne. Staff includes over 500 members and 300 authors. The founders are still actively involved and they’re often found on the road and travelling around the world.
